While humble shepherds watched their flock
This recension of Nahum Tate's well-known hymn, "While shepherds watched their flocks by night," from the Scottish Paraphrases of 1781, sounds as if the text has been translated into Gaelic and then back again into English. The words of the chorus were presumably added by Frank L. Armstrong (1858-1913) who was the composer of the tune. Armstrong was a Philadelphia organist and composer, and the Manager of the J. M. Armstrong Company, music typesetters of Philadelphia.
