Ann Mounsey was one of the leading women organists and composers in nineteenth-century England, and was very highly regarded in her day. She was organist of the London church of St. Vedast, Foster Lane for nearly half a century. She was the accompanist at the first public performance of Mendelssohn's celebrated anthem, "Hear my Prayer," and promptly married the translator of the words, William Bartholomew. This hymn, based on Psalm 130, features a text by William Bartholomew and a tune by his wife. It was written in 1854.
