John Alcock, Sr., D. Mus., Oxon., (1715-1806), was a chorister at St. Paul's Cathedral and in 1729 at the age of 14 became student of the celebrated blind organist John Stanley (1713-1786), who was then himself only 16. Dr. Alcock was Organist of St. Andrew's, Plymouth, 1737-1742; of St. Lawrence, Reading, 1742-1750 (at which time he published his Psalmody from which this Canon is taken); of Lichfield Cathedral, 1750-1765; of Sutton Coldfield Parish Church, 1761-1786; and of Tamworth Parish Church 1766-1790. His son, John Alcock, Jr. (1740-1791) was also an organist and took his B.Mus. at Oxford in 1766 at the same ceremony at which his father received his D.Mus.
