Alexander Pope's hymn celebrates the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles, though some hymnals consider it an Advent or General hymn, and it certainly might also be sung in Advent. The tune "Salem" is one of the first to have been composed by John Henry Hopkins, Jr., dating from 1849.
