Night's darkened shades of sombre gloom
The author of the text, Samuel Curtis Upham, nicknamed "Honest Sam Upham" was an American journalist, lyricist and merchant who counterfeited Confederate currency on behalf of the Union cause during the Civil War. The tune to this Easter carol was written by the blind German-born Philadelphia organist and composer Adam Geibel.
