Raynor Taylor, who was Organist of St. Peter's Church in Philadelphia, wrote this setting of Charles Wesley's hymn "Jesu, lover of my soul," based on the metrical psalm tune "Hotham." It is customary to omit the third stanza when singing the hymn today. "Jesu, Lover of my soul" was a particularly popular hymn in early nineteenth-century America, and many settings of it were written.
