Sarah Elizabeth Buell Hale, poet and the first woman to publish a novel in the United States, was a noted feminist, advocate of women's education and anti-slavery activist, though she favored repatriating slaves to Liberia. She wrote the nursery rhyme, "Mary had a little lamb," was one of the founders of Vassar College and helped to establish Thanksgiving as a public holiday. She is remembered in the Episcopal Church's calendar of Lesser Feasts and Fasts on May 4th.
