O sight of anguish!
The Rev. Samson Occom (1723-1792) was a Native American pastor of the Mohegan tribe who preached the Gospel in eighteenth-century New England. This Christmas hymn displays a remarkable theological depth for eighteenth-century America, and was widely sung on both sides of the Atlantic. The hymn was apparently known in eighteenth-century Dorset and was set to the tune , "Infant Saviour" by William Knapp in his New Church Melody (1751).
