Rejoice and be merry in songs and in mirth
The Rev. Leicester J. T. Darwall was born in Wallsall, Staffordshire, in 1813, and was the great-grandson of the Rev. John Darwall (1731-1789) the composer of the well-known hymn-tune, "Darwall's 148th" ("Ye holy angels bright"). Leicester Darwall matriculated at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1831 and graduated Master of Arts in 1838. He was Curate of Blakeney, Norfolk in 1836-37, and was Vicar of Criggion, Montgomeryshire from 1838 to 1890. A noted botanist as well as a clergyman and musician, he died at Tenby, Pembrokeshire, in 1897. At some stage in his life he came into possession of an old Gallery Book from Dorsetshire, and published a number of carols he found there. This Christmas carol was published by Martin Shaw and Percy Dearmer in The English Carol Book (1913).
