Glory be to God on high
This Christmas carol was based by Charles Wesley on the canticle, "Gloria in excelsis Deo" and was sung among the Methodists of Cornwall to the tune "Amsterdam" by James Nares (1715-1783). The text of the first stanza only of this carol is found only on a broadside in the Bodleian Library [Harding B.7 (64)] printed in Devonport for S. & J. Keys, 7 James Street, Devonport, and also sold by W. Burridge of Truro and J. Perrow of St. Austle [sic.].
