Jesus Christ, my Lord and Saviour
The text of this carol is found on a broadside in the Bodleian Library [Harding B.7 (22)] printed in Devonport for S. & J. Keys, 7 James Street, Devonport, and also sold by W. Burridge of Truro and J. Perrow of St. Austle [sic.]. The somewhat grovelling character of the text is not uncharacteristic of the "improving" hymns that were produced for children in the early nineteenth century. Given the character of the text, the title of the Broadsheet, "Christmas Mirth" is perhaps something of an oxymoron. The tune "Violet" is found paired with this text in an american Sunday-school collection.
