When marshalled on the nightly plain
The text of this carol is found on a broadside in the Bodleian Library [Harding B.7 (22)] printed in Devonport for S. & J. Keys, 7 James Street, Devonport, and also sold by W. Burridge of Truro and J. Perrow of St. Austle [sic.]. The same carol is also found in another Bodleian broadside [Firth b.26(480), printed by John Wilson of Bideford, Devon. The text was set in several collections to a tune by J. B. Calkin, a London concert pianist and Professor at the Guildhall School of Music. The nautical aspects of this hymn would doubtless have appeared to the Cornish fishermen.
