John Speller's Web Pages - Cornish Carols
Joy to the world
According to Husk this carol was greatly admired in Cornwall and had been sung there at least since the first half of the eighteenth century. The first two lines are the same as those of a hymn published by Isaac Watts in 1709, but the rest of the text is quite different. What tune was used is not known, though it was certainly not "Antioch," arranged from Handel by Lowell Mason at a much later date. The tune I have reproduced here has the look of some antiquity, and is found together with this text in Church Pastorals: Hymns and Tunes for Public and Social Worship (Boston, 1864).
