Joseph an aged man truely
The text of this carol is taken from a broadside in the Bodleian Library [Bod 1869] published by F. Coles, T. Vere and J. Wright in London in around 1670. The text, minus two stanzas (nos. 8 and 14) is also found in Sandys and in Rickert. It appearance in Sandys suggests that it was probably sung in Cornwall. Scholars believe that in earlier times choirs had a limited number of tunes and sang several hymns to each tune. Sandys included only 18 tunes for a total of 80 carols in his book, so I have supplied his Long Meter tune of "I saw three ships come sailing in," for this text as well.
