The holly and the ivy
A Cornish variant of the well-known carol, "The holly and the ivy," reprinted by Ralph Dunstan. The word quire is written queer, suggesting that this is how it was pronounced. The word choir is sometimes spelt chear in the eighteenth century. The word quire, of course, refers to the part of the building beyond the pulpitum (as in, "In quires and places where they sing") and not to the singers.
