Behold that splendour, hear the shout!
The text of this carol was written by an anonymous gentleman in 1753, and sent to William Knapp with a request that he should compose a suitable tune. This Knapp duly did and it was published in New Church Melody (London, 2nd. ed., 1754). A slightly different version of the first three stanzas is found in a broadsheet of Christmas carols printed for R. Woolsock of Helston [Bodleian Library, Firth b.26(538)], and it was doubtless for this version that this West Cornish tune was written. It also made its way to the United States, where William Billings composed a tune for it, "Northborough," published in The Suffolk Harmony (Boston, 1786).
