John Speller's Web Pages - Christmas

All hail the ever-gladdening morn!
According to William Hone in his List of "Christmas Carols now annually Printed" this text by John Byrom was a particularly popular one in the broadsides of his day. According to the Evangelical Magazine for 1790 the tune used was the "well-known Portuguese Hymn," otherwise known as "Adeste Fideles," but the text clearly does not fit this. It does, however, fit Thorley's tune "Portugal," when the last two lines are repeated. Not much is known of Thomas Thorley, Jr., except that he seems to have had some kind of association with Norwich Cathedral.
