To Adam thus Jehovah spake
A poem by James Montgomery, found on a broadside of Christmas carols printed in around 1830 for A. Applegate & E. Cowper, J. Davis, and others in London. A couple decades later it was being sung to the tune "Maryton," written by the Rev. Canon Henry Percy Smith, M.A. (1825-1898), who was Vicar of Great Barton, Suffolk, and later Chaplain of Christ Church, Cannes, France and a Canon of Gibraltar Cathedral.
