John Speller's Web Pages - Christmas

In the field with their flocks abiding
A setting of a text by the Very Rev. Frederic W. Farrar, D.D., Dean of Canterbury. I generally devote my webpages to compositions that are impossible or hard to find elsewhere, but in this instance the carol is quite well known. However, the organ introduction is not generally printed together with it, which is why I have included it here.

John Farmer (1835-1901) was the son of a Nottingham butcher who at the age of 14 was sent to Germany to study at the Leipzig Conservatory. After some years teaching music in Switzerland he returned to England to become the Music Master at Harrow School. Then in 1885 he was appointed organist of Balliol College, Oxford, where the fine Henry Willis I organ in the College Chapel was installed shortly after his arrival in 1886.
