Louise Imogen Guiney, the daughter of an American General, grew up in Roxbury, Massachusetts. A graduate of Vasssar College, she was a prominent Roman Catholic poet and essayist. Although of Irish origins, her first love was England, particularly Oxford, and she died in Chipping Camden, Gloucestershire. There is another setting of this carol by Sir Richard Runciman Terry.
