Bishop Hall, who was Bishop of Norwich in the reign of King Charles I, was a learned, witty and liberal bishop who attempted to build a bridge between the Calvinist and Arminian factions within the Church of England. In his day he was noted as a neo-Stoic philosopher and satirist.
