A fourth-century hymn suitable for Christmas — though dating from before the time when Christmas was actually celebrated as a Christian festival — by Saint Ephrem the Syrian, a Deacon in Edessa. The hymn was set by George Ratcliffe Woodward (1848-1934) to an old English tune harmonized by Edmund W. Goldsmith (1860-1934).
