Miss Humberston

I have been unable to discover anything at all about the mysterious Miss Humbleton, but her pair of double chants are apparently among the earliest extant examples written by a woman. This pair of chants in G Major and G minor is suited to Psalms that reflect contrasting moods. An example is Psalm 44, where verses 1-9 call for a chant in a minor key, while verses 10 to 26 call for a matching chant in a major key.
