Early Canadian Chants -- John Bentley
Untitled Untitled
I believe these were the two earliest Anglican chants ever published in Canada. Although complying as double chants with the Rule of Three and Five, they are notated in a curious way with the playover in triple time. John Bentley, born in either 1754 or 1756, grew up in London, England before emigrating to the United States in 1783. After a while in Philadelphia he moved to Montreal in 1786 and then to Quebec City, where he was the first known organist of the Anglican Cathedral. He died in Quebec City in 1813. These chants were published in Ferdinand H. Andrews, A Collection of Original Sacred Music (Montreal, 1848), pp. 81-82.
